What Kova checks

Two money moves most Canadians never get around to.

Picking the right card and the right registered account takes hours of fine print. Kova does it from your real numbers and keeps checking as they change.

Credit cards

The card that fits how you actually spend

Kova sorts up to 12 months of purchases the way card networks code them, then compares what your card earned with what each Canadian card in its list would have, after the annual fee.

How Kova reads three Canadian purchases
MerchantCounted asRule
No FrillsGroceriesNo Amex
CostcoWarehouseMastercard only
Shoppers Drug MartDrugstoreNot groceries
  • Knows Loblaw grocers like No Frills don’t take American Express
  • Counts Costco as warehouse spending, Mastercard only
  • Leaves out welcome offers that have expired

Registered accounts

The right order for your FHSA, RRSP and TFSA

Tell Kova your income and the room on your notice of assessment. It works out which account to fill first and estimates the refund an RRSP contribution would bring.

  1. 1FHSAFirst-time home buyer? Deduction in, tax-free out for your first home.
  2. 2RRSPHigher bracket today? The refund is usually worth more.
  3. 3TFSALower bracket? No tax on what it earns, and you can take it out any time.
  • Uses 2026 federal and Ontario tax brackets
  • Applies the CRA’s first-time home buyer test for the FHSA
  • Shows every estimate in dollars, labelled as an estimate
  • Every account in one place

Cash, what you owe, your registered accounts and your net, across banks.

  • Spending, sorted

Categories and merchants by month, with your own rules for how things are labelled.

  • One ranked list

Each change with its yearly value, largest first. Dismiss what doesn’t fit you.

How it works

Three steps to your yearly total.

  1. 1

    Tell Kova about you

Your province, income and the contribution room on your notice of assessment. Anything you’re not sure of can stay blank.

  2. 2

    Connect your accounts

Banks, credit cards and investment accounts, read-only through Plaid. You can skip this and come back.

  3. 3

See what each change is worth

A ranked list with the estimated value of each change per year. It refreshes as your accounts sync.

Security

Built to be trusted with your accounts.

Kova only needs to read. Everything else is designed so there’s as little to protect as possible.

  • Read-only through Plaid

The same connection many Canadian finance apps use. Kova can read; it can’t move money or change anything.

  • Encrypted connection keys

The keys that let Kova read your accounts are encrypted before they’re stored, and never sent to your browser.

  • Two-step sign-in

Add an authenticator app so a password alone can’t open your account.

  • Your data, your call

Disconnect an account and Kova deletes what it imported. Delete your Kova account any time from Settings.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

What people usually ask before they sign up.

What is Kova?

Kova is a Canadian personal finance app that connects your bank and credit card accounts, read-only, and shows what you are leaving on the table each year. It compares your credit card with Canadian cards on how you actually spend, and works out which order to fill your FHSA, RRSP and TFSA.

How does Kova pick a credit card for me?

Kova sorts your recent purchases the way card networks code them, then works out what each Canadian card in its list would have earned you, after the annual fee. It knows Canadian rules that generic tools miss: Loblaw grocers such as No Frills and Real Canadian Superstore do not take American Express, and Costco warehouses take Mastercard only and count as warehouse spending, not groceries.

How does Kova decide between my FHSA, RRSP and TFSA?

Kova uses your income, your province and the contribution room on your notice of assessment. If you are a first-time home buyer, the FHSA comes first because it gives a deduction going in and a tax-free withdrawal for your first home. Between the RRSP and the TFSA, Kova compares your tax bracket today and estimates the refund an RRSP contribution would bring, in dollars.

Is it safe to connect my bank to Kova?

Yes. You connect through Plaid, so Kova never sees your bank password, and the connection is read-only: Kova cannot move money or make changes. Connection keys are stored encrypted, two-step sign-in is available, and disconnecting an account deletes what Kova imported from it.

How much does Kova cost?

Kova costs $12 a month or $99 a year in Canadian dollars, which is $45 less than paying monthly. There are no ads. You can cancel at any time from Settings.

Who can use Kova?

Kova is for adults 18 and over who live in Canada. Account and credit card recommendations currently use Ontario tax rules, so they are available to Ontario residents for now.

Does Kova tell me what to buy or sell?

No. Kova covers credit cards, which registered account to use first, idle cash and budgeting. It does not pick funds or tell you what to buy or sell, and it is not a tax-filing service.

Your money, always on course.
